Here are some hint and tips for making your home more energy efficient so that you can save money. Tips include bigger tasks like getting double glazed windows fitted and simple everyday tasks, such as turning lights off, all of which will help you save money.

· Don’t just put your TVs, Freeview boxes, DVD players and video game consoles on standby mode, use the power switch on the appliance to turn it fully offOnly fill the kettle and boil how much water you actually need

What does UPVC actually stand for?

It stands for ‘Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride’ and is the plastic used to manufacture the frames for double glazed windows and doors

How does double glazed glass differ from normal glass?

A double glazed window is made up of two panes of glass that are separated by a bar called a spacer bar. It works by trapping air between the two panes of glass and forms a layer of insulation to stop heat loss in your house.

Will I be able to fit UPVC windows myself?

If you have a basic knowledge in DIY then you should be able to fit the windows yourself. They are not too difficult and should come with fitting instructions.

Do window frames come in other colours apart from white?

Measuring for UPVC Double Glazed Windows

You may think that getting people to measure their own windows to get a quote for double glazed windows would be a big error for a company to make as it would surely lead to customers supplying incorrect measurements and a lot of wasted time, effort and cost for both the person looking for new windows and also the company they are dealing with. The truth though is that the process of doing the measuring for double glazed windows is a simple, quick and effective way of getting a quote from a UPVC windows supplier.

To measure the correct sizes for your windows you must take all of the lengths and widths from outside the house. This might mean pulling on your coat and going outside into the cold but you cannot take the measurements from your living room, they must be taken from the outside. Get your measuring tape and head out into your garden to ensure you are measuring the right lengths. It will only take a couple of minutes to take all the measurements so it is not a very long process and you can be back inside in minutes.

The number one most important factor to remember when placing your measuring tape is that you not measuring the windows that are currently there. You need to be measuring the size from brick to brick to get the size of the available gap for the new UPVC windows. A good tip here is to take multiple measurements of the gap from different places. Remember the window frame will be fitted into this gap so the new frame needs to be smaller than the narrowest gap from brick to brick by about 10mm.

One final tip is to take the measurement in multiple units or be ready to do the conversions. Some window companies might use millimetres and some might use inches. You could either take all the distances in the different units during the measurement process or take them in one metric and then sit down and do the conversions yourself. Whichever process you use, it’s important to be able to give your measurements in the units that are required.

As well as self measuring, most double glazed windows companies will also be able to send out somewhere to do the measurements for you but this can involve a cost. Whichever way you choose to do it, follow the above tips if self measuring and you will have your new UPVC windows fitted in no time.
